Runpod’s journey from Reddit to $120M ARR shows the power of innovation and timing.

New Jersey: Runpod is an AI hosting platform that started four years ago. It has reached $120 million in annual revenue. Founders Zhen Lu and Pardeep Singh shared their story with TechCrunch.
Their journey shows how good timing and great ideas can lead to success. They began by turning their old cryptocurrency mining rigs into AI servers because they found the software hard to use. This happened before popular tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E 2 were even released.
In 2021, they had been working at Comcast together when they decided to shift gears. Mining Ethereum had become boring after a while, and they wanted to find a way to use their expensive equipment. They had spent around $50,000 on their hobby and needed to make it work.
Lu and Singh worked on machine learning projects and thought their new idea could help. They named their new platform Runpod. After making it, they needed users to test their product. Lu suggested posting on Reddit, where they offered free access to their servers in exchange for feedback.
This clever move worked! They gained many beta users, which helped them find paying customers. Within nine months, they made over $1 million in revenue.
However, as business grew, some clients wanted better access. They needed to partner with data centers for better equipment. It was stressful for the founders to keep up with demand since users wanted reliable services.
Meanwhile, their popularity grew on Reddit and Discord, especially after the launch of ChatGPT. One day, a VC named Radhika Malik reached out after seeing their posts. She was very helpful and guided Lu through the investor world.
For almost two years, they didn’t take any funding, but they kept their business growing. By May 2024, they had 100,000 developers using Runpod and raised a $20 million seed round. Now, they have 500,000 customers, including big names like OpenAI and Zillow.
Despite facing tough competition from giants like AWS and Google, they aim to be the go-to platform for the next generation of developers. Lu believes the future will involve more designers creating with AI.
