OpenAI is testing ads in ChatGPT soon, promising they won’t change the chatbot’s helpful answers.

OpenAI says that these ads will not change what ChatGPT tells you. For example, if you ask about planning a trip to New York City, you will still get a useful answer. However, you might also see an ad for a hotel nearby. Fidji Simo, the CEO of applications at OpenAI, explained in a blog post that it’s important to keep trust while adding ads.
The first ads will show for users on ChatGPT’s free version and the new $8 Go tier. The Go tier helps users do more, like sending extra messages and making more images. People with Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscriptions won’t see any ads.
OpenAI shared that they will not sell user data or share conversations with advertisers. This means that advertisers won’t know your age, location, or interests. Instead, they will see general information about how ads perform, like how many times an ad was shown.
To show ads, OpenAI plans to connect chat topics to relevant ads. Some user personalization data may be used, but people can turn off this data while keeping other personalization features. OpenAI did not clarify what exact data they will collect, but users can ask ChatGPT to remember things about them, like hobbies or preferences. Users have the option to clear data related to ads anytime.
