New York: The BIOS and chipset drivers were not available during the review. AMD provided an Asus ROG Crosshair X870E Hero motherboard, which has cool features. It also came with a 32-GB dual-channel kit of 6000 MHz G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo memory and a Samsung 9100 Pro SSD. The gaming tests used the Nvidia RTX 5080 FE, which I reviewed last year. This motherboard might be a bit fancy for many, but I think it is a good choice to pair with the CPU.

The chip was tested with a 360-mm AIO cooler, the Corsair Nautilus 360 RS. It stayed between 79 and 80 degrees Celsius during tough tests, which is good. For everyday use, it was around 59 to 65 °C, so the fans were not working too hard. Most AIO coolers should easily keep the heat down. AMD is still using the same AM5 socket. They promised to support it for at least another year, and there are many great motherboards and coolers to choose from.

Another great thing is overclocking. AMD keeps this process easy for everyone. Even if you are new to overclocking, you can just press the “Auto” button in Ryzen Master. This shows you the recommended changes, including memory speed. It then helps you apply those settings and restart for a stress test. There are different presets and a full manual mode, which is user-friendly. Ryzen Master feels modern compared to Intel’s XTU.

Performance-wise, the 9850X3D is a gaming chip. However, looking at some benchmarks, it scored 2,240 in a Cinebench R23 single-core test. The older chip only reached 2,138, so that shows a close to 5 percent boost. In multi-core tests, the older 9800X3D scored 22,972 while the 9850X3D reached 22,982. This is expected since the chips are quite similar.
