Google DeepMind employees seek safety measures from ICE after recent violence raises concerns

New York: Google DeepMind has staff who feel unsafe because of ICE, or Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They want leaders to help keep them safe at work. Recently, a nurse named Alex Pretti was killed by federal agents, which worried many employees. They asked in a message, “How is GDM keeping us safe from ICE?” and mentioned that immigration status and even laws don’t stop agents from using violence.
The message got many thumbs up from coworkers. However, company leaders, including CEO Sundar Pichai, have not replied. Employees at other companies like Palantir have also shared fears about working with ICE, and some want to cut ties.
Google officials did not share comments but mentioned before that they deal with many foreign workers who need special visas. They even warned workers not to leave the country due to stricter visa checks. While some leaders have defended the visa programs, many top executives, from different companies, have kept silent about the ICE activities affecting workers.
