Grubhub Parent Company Acquires Restaurant Rewards Startup Claim for Growth

San Francisco: Grubhub’s parent company, Wonder, has bought Claim, a rewards app for local restaurants. Claim started in 2021 and gives cash-back rewards. Users can redeem these rewards for dine-in or pickup orders at their favorite places.

The deal’s financial details weren’t shared, but Claim raised about $20 million, hitting a $62 million valuation. With this acquisition, Grubhub wants to help restaurants gain new customers and retain regulars. It will also offer more savings and rewards to diners.

Claim CEO Sam Obletz said, “By combining our rewards with smart machine learning, we can help restaurants find regular customers. Joining Grubhub helps us reach more diners and restaurants.” All Claim team members have been invited to join Grubhub.

Now that Claim is part of Grubhub, more restaurants will connect with people through tailored rewards. Grubhub thinks this will lower costs for getting new customers and encourage diners to return without making things complicated.

Grubhub’s CEO, Howard Migdal, said Claim’s tech offers new ways for restaurants to engage diners in person. With both companies together, over 415,000 merchants can use Claim’s tools to help nearly 20 million diners save money.

Currently, Claim is available in New York City, with plans to expand later. Existing Claim users can still use the app as before. Grubhub plans to make a smoother experience across both apps for diners and restaurants but hasn’t revealed how.

Claim’s current users might see some changes in how rewards are given. However, they can still expect personalized promotions at local restaurants.
