He Discovered a Southeast Asian Scam Compound and Fought to Escape Alive

Bangkok: One day in Bangkok, a man called Red Bull received strange orders. An East African agent told him to take a bus to Chiang Mai. After a long trip, he reached the Laos border and took a selfie outside the immigration office. Soon, an official came and demanded 500 Thai baht, about $15. Red Bull paid the man, got his passport stamped, and then went to a boat on the Mekong River. The boat took him to the area where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet.

When he arrived in Laos, a young man took Red Bull’s passport without explaining why. He showed Red Bull the same selfie and gave it to immigration. In return, Red Bull got a visa. The man left, taking Red Bull’s passport with him.

Later, Red Bull met the agent again, who put him in a white van and drove him to a hotel in northern Laos for the night. He felt nervous about his upcoming job interview the next day.

The next morning, Red Bull went to a tall, gray building. He took a typing and English test with a Chinese man and a translator. After passing, they asked him about Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Red Bull was excited but shocked when they told him he wasn’t an IT manager. He would be a scammer.

Panic filled Red Bull at this moment. He begged for one more night at the hotel before starting. The boss agreed. That night, he searched online, learning about scams in the Golden Triangle. He read stories of people trapped like him without a way to escape. When his parents video-called him, he hid the truth and told them he got the IT job.

Days passed with little training. Red Bull worked in a scam group called the Boshang compound. He learned how to create fake profiles and send misleading messages to trick victims. Red Bull shared a tiny dorm room with five others, which felt cramped.

But he didn’t give up. Red Bull realized he knew more about computers than his coworkers and bosses, who only used social media and cryptocurrency. Soon, he dreamed of gathering information on the scam compound and finding a way to expose it.
