San Francisco: OpenAI made waves last year after buying Jony Ive’s startup. They are keeping details secret about their first hardware device. However, Chris Lehane, the Global Affairs Officer, shared at a Davos panel that they plan to announce the device later this year.

Sam Altman, the CEO, mentioned it would be calmer than an iPhone. Reports say this device might be earbuds, codenamed “Sweet Pea.” These earbuds could have a special design and use a 2-nanometer processor to handle tasks without needing an internet connection.

There’s news that OpenAI might partner with Luxshare in China for making them, but they may choose Taiwan’s Foxconn instead. They aim to sell 40 to 50 million units in the first year.

OpenAI has many users for ChatGPT but depends on other devices to reach them. With its own earbuds, they may have better control over how their AI is used. However, it will be hard to replace AirPods without great integration with phones and computers.

So far, no AI device has really taken off. The Humane AI Pin was sold to HP last year, while other products have struggled. Big tech is still pushing into wearables, like Meta’s new Ray-Ban glasses and Amazon’s AI recorder.
