The Pentagon is developing its own AI tools after breaking ties with Anthropic over military access restrictions and contract disputes.

Washington DC: The Pentagon is working on making its own AI tools after ending its contract with Anthropic. Cameron Stanley who leads the Pentagon’s digital and AI programs told Bloomberg that the Department of Defense is building new AI systems.
The Pentagon started building alternatives to Anthropic’s AI after their $200 million contract fell apart. Anthropic wanted to limit what the military could do with its AI technology but the Pentagon refused. They wanted to use the AI without any restrictions.
Instead of working with Anthropic the Pentagon made deals with other companies. OpenAI signed an agreement to provide AI tools and the Department of Defense also works with Elon Musk’s xAI company for classified systems. Some people thought Anthropic and the Pentagon might fix their agreement but this new information shows otherwise.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called Anthropic a supply chain risk which usually means a company is a threat to national security. This means Pentagon workers cannot use Anthropic’s services. Anthropic is fighting this decision in court because they believe it hurts their business.
The military is moving forward with building its own AI tools that it can control completely. These new systems should be ready for use very soon. This shows how important AI has become for military operations and why the government wants full control over this technology.
