Microsoft’s CEO emphasizes Copilot AI’s popularity amid concerns over spending and growth.

CEO Satya Nadella assured investors that spending is necessary. Microsoft spent $72.4 billion on capital this year, almost as much as last year’s total of $88.2 billion. They are investing this money mainly in AI for businesses and labs like OpenAI.
Investors are concerned because Microsoft’s main cloud product, Azure, and Microsoft 365 didn’t grow as quickly as expected. Analyst Karl Keirstead noted both fell short of projections but still recommends the stock.
In the past, there were worries that people weren’t using Microsoft’s AI tools. Nadella focused on AI use during the earnings call. He claimed that users of Copilot AI grew “nearly 3x year-over-year,” but didn’t share exact numbers.
Microsoft mentions 150 million total Copilot users, including both consumers and businesses. GitHub Copilot has 4.7 million paid subscribers, up 75% from last year. Microsoft 365 Copilot has 15 million paid seats purchased by companies. AI for healthcare, Dragon Copilot, is used by 100,000 providers and documented 21 million patient visits this quarter.
Nadella remains optimistic about the return on AI investments, noting demand for services is much higher than what their data centers can currently provide.
