Federal safety regulators upgrade investigation into Tesla’s FSD software after crashes in poor visibility and traffic violations

Tesla, Austin: Government safety experts are looking more closely at Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software after problems in fog and other bad weather.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started this check in October 2024 to see if the software crashes in places that are hard to see. One crash even hurt someone walking. They have found a few more problems like this since then.
The agency also wants to know if Tesla fixed these issues. Tesla started making a fix in June 2024, six months before the check began. But Tesla has not told the safety experts which cars got the fix or if it’s working.
Safety officials say the software sometimes can’t see things like other cars or people when it’s foggy or rainy. They also say it doesn’t warn drivers soon enough before a crash. The experts worry some crashes might not be reported because cars can’t catch all the problems.
This check is one of two happening now. The other looks at FSD software breaking traffic rules like running red lights. Safety experts are still talking with Tesla to get more answers.
