The funding came from Bessemer Venture Partners with help from GV Alphabet’s investment arm. Modern Capital, Threshold Ventures, and others also invested money. Jeff Lawson who helped start Twilio the communication company leads the team. Annie Kritcher led important experiments at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Mike Dunne from Stanford University helped design power plants based on NIF technology. Annie Kritcher continues to work at Lawrence Livermore.

The NIF laboratory achieved something special called scientific breakeven. This means the fusion reaction gives out more energy than it takes in. But power plants need more work to make electricity for homes. Inertia plans to build lasers that deliver 10 kilojoules of energy 10 times per second. The company uses a method called inertial confinement. Powerful lasers hit small fuel targets until atoms join together releasing energy. NIF uses 192 lasers to hit expensive targets that take many hours to make. Inertia wants to use 1000 lasers hitting tiny 4.5 mm targets that cost less than one dollar each. The company thinks using NIF’s ideas with cheaper production will lower costs.

Big Money Flows to Fusion: Over $10 Billion in Recent Investments

Many fusion companies recently received large investments. Fusion startups have attracted more than $10 billion total from investors. At least a dozen companies received over $100 million each recently. Avalanche received $29 million for smaller fusion reactors last week. Type One Energy got $87 million and seeks $250 million more in funding now. Commonwealth Fusion Systems raised $863 million from investors like Google and Nvidia last summer. Two fusion companies announced plans to become public companies through mergers. General Fusion will merge with Spring Valley III in a $1 billion deal. TAE Technologies plans to merge with Trump Media & Technology Group valuing the combined company at $6 billion.
