India Blocks Developer Platform Supabase Under IT Act Order

New Delhi: Supabase, a popular developer database platform, has been blocked in India. The Indian government ordered internet providers to restrict access to the website. This happened on February 24 under Section 69A of India’s Information Technology Act. This law allows officials to limit public access to online content.

The Indian government has not given an official reason for the block. It remains unclear if this was due to a computer security concern, a copyright issue, or something else. The block has affected many users across India, though access has been inconsistent on different internet networks.

Supabase reported in a social media post that they will continue following up with all available channels to resolve the situation. Some users stopped seeing new sign-ups from India, and developers reported problems accessing the platform for their work. Using tools that reroute internet traffic, like VPNs, can help but may not work for everyone.

India is Supabase’s fourth-largest source of traffic, making up about 9% of its global visits. This block could harm India’s developer community that relies on the platform. The Indian government has used similar powers before to block websites, including when authorities briefly restricted access to GitHub and other services during past investigations.
