VW stops making electric ID.4 at U.S. factory to focus on gas SUVs like Atlas

Chattanooga, Tennessee: Volkswagen announced it will stop making the electric ID.4 car at its U.S. factory.
The company will now focus on making gas-powered SUVs like the Atlas. Customers can still buy ID.4 cars until current supply runs out. Volkswagen thinks the supply will last until 2027. The German company had planned to make more electric cars but slowed down those plans. Many buyers want cheaper cars, and the ID.4 costs about $45,000. Sales went up some years but dropped 55% the next year.
The auto industry made big promises about electric cars but has changed plans recently. Car companies like Volkswagen are going back to gas-powered vehicles. Many buyers don’t want expensive electric cars without government tax breaks. While electric cars still sell, most people want lower prices or used models instead.
The new Atlas SUV will start being made this summer at the same factory. Workers who made ID.4 cars can now work on Atlas production. Volkswagen plans to bring electric cars back to America someday. When they do, the cars will need to be much less expensive. Volkswagen remains committed to making cars in the United States.
